Integration – A New Category and Nine Quick Opinions

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are doing well today.

This will be a short post, but I made an important update to the Discussing Dissociation blog and wanted to be sure that you all knew about it.

I have been asked repeatedly about my views on integration.  I’ve written posts and comments about this topic, but unfortunately, I didn’t create a “category” for these posts. So now, with the 170+ articles on this blog, these posts and comments are difficult to find.  Of course!  This means it’s time to simplify this topic search for everyone, and to make it simpler for the Discussing Dissociation readers to find these blog articles.

I’m assuming, in all my many blatherings on this blog that I’ve made more comments about integration than just what is written in these two blog articles.  However, this link is a good start. If anyone finds comments about integration in other articles, please let me know, so I can be sure to add that article to the category list as well.

In case you don’t have time to read the other articles at the moment, I’ll give you a quick summary of what I think about integration right here in this post.

Quick Thoughts about Integration – Kathy Broady’s Opinions:

Is integration necessary?  
Absolutely not.

Is integration beneficial?  
I doubt it.

Is integration the ultimate peak / proof of healing for dissociative trauma survivors?  
Not at all.

Does integration need to be your treatment goal?  
Not unless you say so.  I wouldn’t ever ever make it a treatment goal for any of my clients.

If integration is not the treatment goal, what is?
Team work.  Lowering the dissociative walls between internal people.  Internal communication.  Talking together.  Not hiding information from each other.  Building trust and genuine relationships within your system. Learning to genuinely love and care for each other.

Do you, Kathy, think that integration is possible?  
Honestly?  Not really.  Not complete and “total” integration.  I have not yet met anyone who integrated in such a way that they stayed integrated permanently for the rest of their life.  I have not even met anyone that I would say has been integrated successfully for years of time.  I have heard the stories of many such claims, and met some of these people, but in my opinion, none of the “integrated” people that I have ever talked with were able to literally demonstrate true integration.  They were still very multiple in oh so many ways.

I’m not convinced that a person who has lived most of their entire life as a multiple can literally change their brain in such ways to become a singleton.  Besides, what would be the point anyway?

Do you think that blending is possible?
Yes, absolutely.  To me, blending and coming closely connected together in a co-conscious ways are very different from integration.  Blending does not imply a complete union of absolutely everyone.  It is perfectly natural, normal, and healthy for some of the splits to become more blended together, especially those parts that are already very close to each other.  If their blending happens naturally, that is great.  You cannot force blending to happen, and it doesn’t happen instantly.  It is a very gradual process that happens over years of excellent therapy, healing work, and genuine external safety.  If there is any kind of “forcing” or demanded blending under duress or coercion or deception, you can bet that those insiders will step back and separate again in the not so distant future.

Do you think that integration keeps you safe?
Ummmm…. No.   In fact, I think that claims of integration can lead to the very opposite of safety.   Why?  Because I think that real and genuine integration so very rarely happens (if ever), that when someone begins to believe that they are integrated, this is the beginning of some really dangerous times.  This typically means, in my experience, that some of the top layers of the system may have blended together, and/or learned how to work well together, but the darker under-layers of the system have hidden behind very thick dissociative walls.  This is extremely dangerous because the dark parts are able to function without being noticed, and the top layers of the system are too busy being proud or protective of their integration and/or completely absorbed in their outside lives that they don’t notice the dark rumblings behind the wall.

Do you think that integrated multiples are safe leaders for other dissociative survivors?
No.  Not that I have seen.  In my opinion, it is much more likely that the alleged “integrated multiple” has very neatly hidden or shoved away their dark sides, even if they do not realize  this.  All the claims in the world of being integrated do not actually make someone integrated.

In fact, following the leadership of someone who alleges to be an “integrated multiple” can be extremely dangerous for others, especially for those who are newer in their healing process.  You would be safer to run 100 miles in the other direction than to assume that an integrated multiple is “automatically” a safe person.

I know many of you will not like these statements, and it is ok if you disagree.  I am not meaning to offend you.  We each have our own opinion and our own experiences in life.  Let me repeat this, because it is so very important.   In my years of experience, “integrated multiples” have more often than not been used as lures, and in reality, they are people who have not completed  HUGE areas of work, and they are not automatically “safe” people.  Going further into this topic  is an entirely different blog post, but in my opinion, there is a whole whopping lot of danger in this area.  PLEASE be careful when you meet an “integrated multiple”.

I am very aware that there are many multiples who have had spiritually-based integrations.  That is yet another complicated topic, to be discussed at another time.

Ok – this was going to be short (and of course, it’s not short!!), so I’ll stop at this point.  I can feel the waters already getting stirred out there.  Ah well.  What is life without controversy, yes?

IF I thought integration was a great thing, I would certainly say so.  I just haven’t seen it as such.

Pie Squabbles – A Story about Internal Conflict

Recently, my magpie visitors set a new record high for the size of the group gathering at my balcony waiting for treats.

At one single point in time, I had 18 pies there surrounding me, all squawking and squawling and calling and cheeping and chirping and whistling and warbling and garbling and gawking and flapping and hopping, each hoping to be the next in line for the little bits of bologna I was handing out to them.  Eighteen pies!  That’s a lot of birds, and they were making a whopping lot of noise!

There had been a number of rainy days in a row, and while pies surely know how to survive in the roughest of weather, they were all looking very raggedy in their sopping wet feathers.  Oh, they were a sad sight, all droopy, and soggy, and drippy.  Some of the pies were trying to fluff up more than usual to keep the rain off them.  Others couldn’t even muster their feathers up anymore.  The days of rain must have worn them out.

I know I wouldn’t want to be living outside in a rainy rainy thunderstorm that lasted for days and days.  I don’t know where pies go to sleep and rest, but I can’t imagine it being fun at all.  It seems to me that bug-chasing in the rain would be difficult, and sludging through deep puddles of muddy water would be more suited for ducks than for pies.

Yes, my big group of pies were a sad sight.  A big soggy, soppy, sad sight.

And they were hungry.  Really hungry.

Most of the time, the pies will take turns nicely when it comes to treat time.  There are the more aggressive front runners, of course, but for the most part, everyone gets a share, and it’s easy enough to make sure that the treats are spread out rather evenly between everyone.

It’s a totally different story when they are hungry.

And it’s even more challenging when there are 18 hungry birds all at the same time.

The claws come out, literally.  The pies will fight each other to be first in line, or to get that specific bite of food that they had their eyes on.

Of course, if they could understand that there was enough food for everyone, and that they didn’t need to fight to get their turn, it could have all happened peacefully.  But these so-called wild birds didn’t understand that.  They were still fighting out of their natural instincts.

The pretty little gray timid pie stayed in the background.  She’s smaller and younger than the others, a newcomer to the group.  She’s noticeably different in coloring from all the others, and the rest of the pies dominate her for the most part.  She didn’t fight anyone for anything, and she would not have gotten a single bite of bologna had I not specifically made sure to directly give some to her.  Even then, I had to take time to convince her that it was ok for her to have it.  Then, after all that, I believe a more aggressive bird swooped in grabbing and snatching the pieces that fell to the ground, not even allowing little gray pie to finish her own serving.

Some of the more trusting-of-me pies would run up near to my feet, separating themselves from the crowd, willing to get as close to me as possible to ensure they would get hand-fed away from the others.  That was the easiest way to make sure of getting something to munch on.

Some of the pies would charge in fast, demanding first dibs, and then fly away to enjoy their mini-feast in the privacy of some hidden corner of grass somewhere else.

Sometimes two or three pies would squabble over the same bite.  These squabbles can become real fights where they are pulling each other’s feathers with their beaks, or digging their claws into the tummies of the other birds, pinning the unfortunate bird on its back.  (Yikes!  I sure don’t like that!)  Sometimes they will click and snap their beaks at each other, making a loud scary noise, clearly meant to intimidate the other pie with a definite “Get back or I’ll poke you!” message.  They will repeatedly screech and scream at each other, with their beaks open wide, making very loud protests and declarations of “Mine!  Mine!  Mine!”.

So much fighting!

It’s not like a tiding of wild birds will ever have to learn to get along with each other on a small balcony in one part of town.  As these babies grow up, they will have to spread out into their own areas to live, and I assume, some of the birds I am pampering now will have to scoot on down the road to other areas.  In nature, there is a very definite pecking order and lots and lots of space to move to.  Maggies will argue and fight to survive, and to fight to claim their territory just like all wild animals have done for thousands of years.  Survival of the fittest keeps the species alive and well.

And the tough times in life bring out the fighting responses.

But what about when the fighting occurs within a group that really does have to live together?

What happens when moving on down the road is not a legitimate option?

What about squabbles and fights within a dissociative system?  For people with dissociative identity disorder, living with groups of people, and internal fights, and intense conflict is a common state of mind.  There are ways to internally separate those that are fighting with each other, at least on a temporary basis, but really, everyone is always there.  Until the conflicts are resolved peacefully, the fighting can continue to happen day after day.

That kind of ongoing conflict would be very difficult to live with.  It would feel noisy, and stressful, and overwhelming.  It could be scary for the more timid parts, and intense for the ones with extreme emotions.  All too often, internal conflict leads to self-destructive behaviors.

Can you relate to that?

What do you do when your groups of insiders squabble?

How do you work out the conflicts and disagreements?

Do you know how to find ways to problem-solve by working the problem, instead of fighting each other?

Does your system take turns, sharing time and resources with each other?

Do your insiders help each other more than they hurt each other?

There are always going to be different opinions, and different perspectives, and opposing needs.  There are going to be parts inside that are more aggressive than others.  There will always be parts that are smaller, younger and quieter.  Within the dissociative system, there will very often be many insiders that are still feeling wounded, hurt, distraught – insiders who need extra care, nurturing, and attention.

How do you tend to all the varying needs and wants without squabbling in ways that make the problems worse, instead of better?

The Bullying Bird

Continuing on with the magpie stories, I’m pleased to tell you about another interesting magpie.

Please note – I am not an expert on magpies by any means.  I write stories based only on my personal observations and personal experiences with the birds themselves.  I really know nothing about them!

Also, please note – this story has a few sections that could be upsetting for young readers.  Please let your older ones read first, and decide after that if you want your littles to read it on their own.

Ok, on to the maggie tales…

As I spent interacting time with the young maggie babies, I gradually noticed a few other birds that hung around as well.  One of the first and most obvious birds was a bigger, closer to full-grown magpie bird.

In fact, this adult maggie was around so much that I began to wonder if she was the momma maggie.  And then I noticed that according to the coloring of its feathers, that this big bird was likely a male bird, so I wondered if he was the daddy maggie.  Either which way, I initially assumed that this adult looking pie was likely a parental type to some of the many younger pies that stayed close, always warbling with their pretty songs.  I had observed several of adults birds taking the time to feed their young from the treats that I provided, and I guessed this big bird was just parenting in his own style.

But there was something different about this bigger bird.  I knew that the younger pie babies were very cautious of him.  Some were obviously scared of him.  The little pies would either fly away, or stay much further away, or sit very still and fade into the background whenever the big bird swooped into the balcony area.  And if the big guy wanted the snack, he got it.  The younger pies clearly knew to give the older pie the right of way immediately.  No questions asked.

To my surprise, if any of the younger pies were a little too slow in moving out of his way, this big bully bird would charge directly at them, flap his wings fast with aggression, squawk loudly, and do whatever he needed to do to clear the others away as quickly as possible.  Sometimes he flew at them like a speeding maggie torpedo.  Other times he would land on the balcony and act like he completely owned the space, all puffed and fluffed with his aggressive nature.

I don’t know how the little pies could hear – sense (?) – feel (?) when this big bully pie was flying into our little nibbling corner.  I very often didn’t even realize the Big Boy was nearby until the groups of little ones suddenly scattered off in a big noisy flurry of flapping wings.

Just by flying in my direction, Bully Bird was able to send the others packing off, practically clearing out the entire area for himself in just a matter of seconds.

At first, my response was to also be immediately cautious and respectful of this incoming fast-swooping bird.  I knew that magpies could be vicious with their beaks, and his size and strength and speed were not something I wanted to mess around with.  I was irritated that he kept interrupting my tea parties with the young pies.  I was not at all happy about his mean bully ways.  You could say that I was scared of him too.  I certainly was not quick to hand-feed this guy!  I kept my distance and made slow gentle moves when he was near, trying to soothe the little pies, saying it would be ok, and they’d still get their treats once this Bully Bird moved on down the road.

Then one day, an observation made by my friend made all the difference in the world.

While Bully Bird and I were being very cautious of each other, my friend, who was watching from the side, noticed that Bully Bird had a very unusual condition.

I had to move to the other side to see, but I looked closely, and then I saw it too.  And what I saw changed everything for me.

With a close look at Bully Bird, we could see that he had somehow, somewhere, lost one of his eyes.  Mr. Bully Bird was a one-eyed pie!  He couldn’t see anything on the one side of his head, nor was there any hope that he would ever be able to regain the sight on that side of his head.

In that instant, my feelings towards Bully Bird changed completely.  I realized he was struggling to survive just like the little younger pies were doing.  I also realized he had a life-long disadvantage that kept him needing extra care and attention.  And, I realized that he was in more danger and had more life difficulties than I had ever imagined.

I changed my approach to my One-Eyed Pie (including changing the name I called him), and began to make sure that he had extra food tossed in his direction.  He immediately became a priority to me, and I was quick to make sure to reward him with some treat of some kind whenever he showed up.

I told the other little pies that we needed to try to become friends with One-Eyed Pie, and to help him since he had clearly had some very difficult times in his life.

Gradually, One-Eyed Pie began to trust me.  He let me inch closer and closer to him, and eventually, he inched closer to me as well.  He began to take his treats from my hand.  He was certainly more cautious about this process than most of the other pies.  While trying to decide if he could trust me, he had to also keep turning his head all around to look around to make sure no one else was going to swoop on him.  The local groups of aggressive crows were notorious for taking food from the magpies, and the crows were easily double in size of even the largest of pies.  One-Eyed Pie was smart to be careful.  To look at me, and to look at the food I was offering him meant that he couldn’t be looking out in the world to protect himself from other predators.  He was taking a big risk just to get close to me.

Once I was able to stand close to One-Eyed Pie, I realized that he had survived more than his painful eye injury.  He had all kinds of scars around his head, especially on the top of his head.  Clearly, this bird had seen some rough days.  His wounds were all healed, so they were not recent, but the scars were going to be with him for life.  New feathers did not grow through the scar tissue.

One-Eyed Pie and I began to talk every day, and usually more than once a day.  We were becoming friends, and he was becoming much more comfortable with me.  The more I saw him, the more I could see how beautiful he was.

Instead of snatching the food from me in a rushed hurry, he began to take his time, and nibble bits and pieces with comfort and ease.  He still watched for the crows, but he was not stressing when I was near him.

I also noticed something else.  As One-Eyed Pie and I became friends, his behavior towards the other younger pies improved drastically.  He knew that he was going to be treated with respect from me, and he stopped bullying the babies. He stopped being so aggressive towards the other little ones and no longer charged them.  The little maggies were able to sit closer to him, and they were able to come closer to me while he was around.  One-Eyed Pie was fitting in more with the group.

Once he was seen for who he really was, and once his needs were more accurately met, One-Eyed Pie stopped acting like a bully.

Amazing.  And how exciting to see this transformation happen right before my eyes.

One-Eyed Pie is a great magpie.  He’s truly beautiful.  Strong.  Brave. And wonderful.  He’s earned my respect, and he is a bird I will never forget.

The parallels of this story for DID survivors is obvious and layered.

First of all, I have never met a DID system that did not have at least one bully / aggressive part.  Even if hidden deep inside, or kept in the background, or kept separate from outside interactions, these mean insiders are typically very active within the internal system.

The bully-type insiders typically carry a lot of weight around the younger parts, typically intimidating them and bossing them around.  Sometimes these bully parts actually hurt the others inside.

And, in my experience, all bully parts within the DID system have had their own trauma history, even if they don’t want to admit that for the longest time.  They will typically hide the fact that they have been hurt in the past, but once you gain their trust, you will be able to find out more about how they were hurt, when, where, etc.

Once you are aware of them, the bully parts need to become your priority.  They will need your time, your attention, your patience, and your understanding.  These parts are extremely important in your system, and the more you work to get to know them, the better.  They can fit nicely within your group, but you will have to work at that.

The rewards of gaining the trust of your bully parts are enormous.  Gaining their cooperation and friendship will bring a level of strength and peace into your system that you will not expect, or regret.

Get to know your bullies.  They are worth it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!

Hi Everyone –

How was 2010?  Was it a good year for you?  Was it a rough year for you?  Hmmmm….  Do you remember what kind of year it was for you?  (lol, teasing.  :)   That’s a joke for dissociative people, lol).

Everyone, quick – check inside.  Do they know how your year was?

In all seriousness, if you are unsure or blank, try asking your inner people what the year (or any particular timeframe) was like.  What do you hear when you ask them?  Do you hear a bunch of responses?  Are your insiders remembering things? Are they mentioning things that are different from what you remembered?

Your insiders will remember bits of history that you won’t remember.  Incidents that occurred while they were out may very well be contained only in their memory instead of yours.  This is why having good internal communication is important. The more you know your insiders, the more you are able to speak with them, or listen to them, the more you can know what has happened in the whole of your life.  Talk to your insiders regularly (about the simple, everyday type things) so when you need to know something more specific, you will have the relationship and rapport needed for them to be able to share their history with you as well.

As for 2011…

I wish the best for you.
I wish you peace in your mind.
I wish you moments of quiet, and hours of genuine relaxation.

I hope you will build friendships with your insiders.
I hope that you will find the courage to look behind those blocks.
I hope that you have more kindness and acceptance than you have ever had before.

I challenge you to talk to each and every insider that you have.
I challenge you to reach out to others and help someone else in their healing journey.
I challenge you to improve your health mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

I encourage you to be gentle, and to remember the power of compassion and understanding.
I encourage you to make the world a better place, no matter where you are, or what you’re doing.

What eleven things do you wish and hope for?

Who’s Looking at You In the Mirror?

The following drawing is a DID survivor’s response to my question:  Can you picture dissociative identity disorder?

This drawing is helpful to understand dissociation – the very picture itself portrays how it feels to have dissociative identity disorder (DID / MPD).  Assuming this drawing represents one actual person, the plural, divided-self experiences are visually obvious.

In addition to the whole of the picture, I’ve picked out a variety of elements that could be significant to the dissociative system being pictured.  I will include some of the thoughts and questions that come to mind as I look at the different areas of this drawing.  A lot of helpful therapeutic information can surface by asking the following questions to the survivor artist.  Many of these questions could be asked to any other dissociative survivor in terms of exploring their own internal systems.

1. The blank face in the mirror

  • Why is this a blank slate?
  • Is there ever a time when “no one” is there?  What is that like?
  • Does the face place not belong to anyone in specific?
  • How often does this person switch?
  • Does anyone claim the face?
  • Who does the actual face belong to?
  • When you switch, are there visible differences in the face?
  • Is there a specific leader to this dissociative system?  If so, where is this person pictured?
  • How often does this dissociative survivor feel like she is living outside of her body or separated from her body?

2. Notice that there are other inside system parts visible in the overall picture –

  • Some parts are in the front
  • Some parts are in the back – what is the significance of these different locations?
  • Some parts are unknown (blank spots)
  • Some parts are pictured standing alone
  • Some parts are closely connected to someone else
  • Some parts are older, likely adult in age
  • Some parts pictured are very young
  • Some parts pictured are middle-aged children
  • Some parts pictures appear to be teenagers

Additional Questions:

  • Can you identify any of these insiders as specific individuals?
  • Who talks to who?
  • Do the insiders on the back communicate with or know about the insiders located on the artist’s paint palette?
  • Since we are seeing only a small portion of the actual body, are there other parts located elsewhere that are not pictured in this drawing?
  • If there are other system insiders that are not pictured in this drawing, would you consider drawing another picture that does include them?
  • Do the two main figures in this picture represent two distinctly different systems?
  • Are you aware of what happens when the insiders “from the back” are out?
  • Do you experience more time loss with the parts that are connected to the body but not visible because they are on the back or with the parts that you can see, but are more separate and pictured on the paint palette?

3. The hair and the clothes are different in the mirror — ever so slightly — but still different.  Notice the different hairstyles / clothing for the different insiders – a clue for who is out might be related to the actual hairstyle / clothing they are wearing that day.

4. What is the thumb covering? I would need to ask the artist to know what this represents for sure, but several possibilities do come to mind.

  • Is this a dark area of the internal system that is trying to hide?
  • Is this an area that represents difficult feelings like shame, pain, anger, or any areas of life that may not be comfortable to look at?
  • Using the metaphor of the paint palette, the dark spot might indicate a hole in the palette.  Does it have any other significance than that?  Are there “holes” in your system?  To where does that hole lead?

5.  Mirrors
As much as one figure appears to be the reflection in the mirror, is the mirror actually the doorway for an entirely different system than the parts outside of the mirror?  It is not uncommon for mirrors to be part of the internal world / internal landscape of a dissociative survivor.  These mirrors are very significant and will require specific therapeutic attention.

6.   Circles
Some dissociative survivors speak about circles in their life, and circles can represent specific relationships, and / or being “in the circle” can have layers of meaning.

  • Is there any significance or meaning to the circle designs included in this drawing?
  • Do the insiders stay separated in their circle “bubbles” or are they allowed to mingle with each other?

7.  Colors
Since the artist of this drawing used the paint palette metaphor to show their system, do colors have an important meaning to their system?  Are certain parts associated with certain colors?  For example, are there parts from the “green layer” or are there parts associated together as part of the “blue group”, etc.  If so, what do the different colors mean, and what are the common characteristics or job roles of the insiders associated with each color?

8.  Box Frame
What is the relevance of the square / rectangle mirror frame?  Does seeing a main figure inside the box frame have any significance?   Are any of your insiders tucked away in boxes?  If your system insiders are not in boxes, do you have other issues boxed up?

9.  Connection to the Body
One of the strongest themes in this picture relates to the way the different parts of the system appear to be very separate from the body.

  • How often is this person in a numb, dissociated, depersonalized, or out-of-body state?
  • When the parts from the paint palette are “in the body”, can the artist feel that they are present? Or do these parts continue to have a separated distance?
  • Does the body feel the same or different when the mirror-reflection group of insiders is present in the body?

I have found this drawing to be rich in information that would be useful when discussing the dissociative issues experienced by this trauma survivor.  There is much to learn about this survivor-system and asking these questions is just the beginning.

Switching in Your Sleep -– Are you Snoozing or Secretly Awake?

In situations where dissociative survivors feel like they don’t lose time, it can be helpful to ask a lot of questions about how they experience life, time, recall, etc.  There are a wide variety of reasons why systems get so tightly shut down from switching, (or from the appearance of switching), so it really depends on what else is going on.  There could be other ways that the insiders are coming out, and for reasons that would take a lot of exploration, the inside parts could be hiding themselves from the host personalities.

Sleeping can mask a lot of switching.

 

Sleeping

 

Switching during your sleep is one way of losing time when you don’t know that you are losing time.

This is not sleep-walking.  Certain parts of the dissociative system are sleeping deep inside, but the  body of the dissociative person is actually awake and at least one part of the system is completely aware of what is happening.  It may be that one layer of the system is awake while other layers of the system believe they are sleeping.  While some parts sleep, other parts are awake and actively involved with activities.

If you have dissociative identity disorder, how many hours of the day do you sleep?  Even though you assume you are sleeping, are you really asleep?

Sometimes dissociative survivors will tell me they sleep long hours everyday or they take frequent naps.  With careful examination of that sleeping time, it is not unusual for the hosts to adamantly believe they are sleeping, while other parts of the system wake up, get up, and go about their own activities.  When the insiders are finished with their tasks, they lay back down, go back to sleep.  A few minutes (or hours) later, the host wakes back up, with absolutely no awareness that other parts were out and active during what felt like “sleep time”.

 

Do your child parts wake up while your adults are sleeping?

 

  • The host can feel like they were just dreaming.
  • Or they may wonder why they aren’t feeling rested after such a long sleep.
  • Or certain inside parts truly blocked the loss of time from the other parts of the system.
  • Or the host parts “thought” they were resting, and would say, yes, they were doing that, but when they actually think about it, they don’t remember actually doing it.

This type of sleep-hidden switching can also happen for DID survivors sleep in shorter chunks of time as well.  If someone is “always tired”, it is easy enough to hide the additional hours of waking by the normal feeling of “I’m always tired”.

Sometimes, dissociative survivors just don’t think about how much time they are losing – it is a normal way of life, and calling attention to the time loss is what’s new and different.  As far as they are concerned, they have always been dissociative, and they have always switched, they have always had missing chunks, they have always had to scramble or cover for missing information, and they have always slept weird hours.  To think of life as a continuous state is completely foreign.

For treatment purposes, it is important for dissociative survivors to ask their systems why switching to other parts would need to be hidden and disguised through sleep.

 

Do you know who wakes up when you go to sleep?

 

  • Why are these parts hiding so much from you?
  • What are they doing?
  • Are they going anywhere?
  • What keeps them from doing whatever they need to do without having to make you “sleepy”?
  • Why do you need to be asleep for them to be out?
  • Is this a re-enactment from history or do they have their own lives going out completely outside of your awareness?
  • What do they know that you don’t know?
  • Who do they know that you don’t know?

Getting to know the parts on the other side of the dissociative sleep wall is important.  Trying to build a connection and establish some version of communication with these insiders is essential for your healing.

Do Dissociative Trauma Survivors Actually Lose Time?

One of the diagnostic criteria for dissociative identity disorder is experiencing amnesia or lost time.  While losing time may seem like an obvious hole in your every day life, it really might not be as obvious as it seems it could be.

For dissociative trauma survivors, the sliding of time is a normal everyday way of life.  It just is how it is, and time feels very different for DID survivors than it does for other people.  Dissociative survivors may or may not pay attention to the minutes that are gone, or the hours that have slid quietly by.  They are very used to the ebb and flow, and unless there is reason to pay specific attention to the idea of lost time, they may not really be genuinely aware of how much time they lose.

Every dissociative survivor I have met has recognized specific periods of lost time in his or her life.  Sometimes, multiples think they do not lose much time, but with a few detailed questions, it can soon enough be shown that there are very clear gaps in memory and awareness of regular life events.  There will be everyday type things that they know they should know, but they don’t.

Some multiples will notice big chunks of time that seem to be gone.  It will be 2 pm, and then suddenly, it’s 9 pm, and the survivor has no awareness of what happened during those seven hours.  Those hours are considered lost time because they feel completely lost and unaccounted for.  The host parts don’t remember what happened.  If they look around, they might get some clues about what may have happened, but for the most part, it feels like time completely jumped seven hours ahead.  Time feels lost to them because there is basically no information and no awareness about what happened.

Other times, DID survivors will feel like they are mostly aware of everything that happens through their day, but their ability to remember what happened yesterday, or even to remember what happened this morning, or an hour ago is extremely limited.  This is a different kind of lost time in that the recall is so nonexistent that it becomes the same as lost time since the survivor has next to no idea what happened.

In both of these situations, time is being quantified from the perspective of the front host personality.  Time loss can include other parts of the system as well, but the questions about lost time are typically addressed towards the host.  This is an important distinction to remember.

Because you see, even though time feels lost to the front host personality, in all reality, time is not lost at all.

Yes, you read that right.  Time is actually not lost. Time has not actually gone away.  The DID survivor’s day is not shorter than everyone else’s day.  Time has not disappeared in the way that it feels.

While we use the term “lost time” all the time, that is actually not what happens.  In fact, no one with DID actually loses any time at all.

So where does the time go?

Actually, what happens is that the dissociative trauma survivors have switched to another part.

Yep, they’ve just switched.

Switching.  Shifting from one part or another.  “Transitioning” as US of Tara called it.

That’s all that happened.  You’ve switched!

The hours of time can be completely accounted for if you know who was out and what they were doing.  Time itself isn’t missing.  What is missing is having the awareness or knowledge about who in your system was out doing what.

So when the host or front personalities are completely unaware of life events, and there is no knowledge of what has happened, they have simply switched to someone else in their system who is out and doing all kinds of things. The body is likely up and active, and any number of things could be happening.  Someone inside the system will know exactly what happened between 2 pm and 9 pm!

For there to be “lost time”, this switch occurs with parts that are so dissociated and separated from the host personalities that the host personalities are not aware of what happened.

Actually, this kind of time loss / lack of awareness can happen between any part of the system with any other part of the system.  Many of the insiders may not be at all aware of what the host personalities are doing either.  Part of the reason for time distortion, triggers, and flashbacks is connected to the insiders not being aware of the outside life in the current day, place, or time.

Sometimes the lost time between these parts are just from not paying attention.  For example, one set of parts can simply be daydreaming or drifting off, and simply not concentrating enough to be aware.  Maybe they were choosing to have an internal nap or be otherwise internally occupied. However, if they actually tried to be aware of what was happening in the outside world, they may fully well have known exactly what happened during that lost time.  Or with a little effort, they may have been able to get close enough to the front of the body to be aware enough to see, or hear, or know.

Other times, the dissociative walls / amnesiac walls are much thicker and less penetrable.  In these situations, one set of parts does not want the others inside to know what is happening, and the blocks put between them are strong and absolute.  Parts from within the internal system are specifically dividing themselves away from everyone else so everyone inside is not aware.  If you have parts that are specifically hiding their activities from the rest of everyone else, this is an important issue to address in your therapy.

In my opinion, integration is not necessary for successful stable functioning.  But, eliminating time loss and/or periods of unknown switching is important for exactly those reasons.  It is ok that everyone within has their chance to do what they need to do, but it is also important to build the communication around what is happening.  You all share the same life.  Being more aware of what happens in that life is important.

So the next time you want to know what happened during that chunk of time that you don’t remember, ask inside.  Ask who knows about it.  Ask who was out, or who saw what happened. There will be someone inside that knows exactly what was happening during that chunk of “missing time”.  You might need to work on increasing your internal communication with those parts, but once you know the others in your system, that time loss will decrease.

Even if the time loss is happens, but if you know who is out, that can help with knowing what happened.  The more you know your whole system of insiders, the less unaccounted for time you will have.

Once again I’ll say, internal communication is the central core of treatment for dissociative identity disorder.

Where Did I Put My Keys?

Last night I lost my keys in the office.   It was a silly ordeal – they were hanging right where I last put them – but it took me awhile to remember where that was.

I had a little help finding them, and I am really thankful that Mr. Janitor Man was so very kind.  He was patient with me, looking everywhere with me while I retraced my steps of the evening.  We looked under couches, in between cushions, under pillows, through trash bins, in the fridge, in drawers, in cupboards, on shelves.  I knew they had to be there – after all, I had just locked myself IN the building.  I hadn’t gone anywhere because I needed my keys in order to unlock the door to get out of the building, so I knew they couldn’t be far.

But where were they?!

It took awhile, but I gradually got closer to the last place I left them, I remembered exactly where they were.

Success!!  There they were – right where I left them.

And thank you, Mr. Janitor Man for your patience with me.

In order to find them, I simply had to stop and think about where I was when I last remembered having them, and go from there.  My keys were just a few inches from that place.

Today, I had to wonder how my thought processes were the same – or different – from survivors with dissociative identity disorder (DID / MPD) who have to search for their lost keys.

A few weeks back, I was on the other side of this equation.

A DID survivor had lost her car keys for several days.  She had looked everywhere.  She had the feeling that they were still in the house, and remembered where She had last set them.  But the car keys were nowhere to be found.

To help her sort through the lost key issue, She and I had an entirely different process than I did with Mr. Janitor Man.

She had already re-traced her steps best She could.  It was clear the keys were not anywhere She thought they should be.

Because of the dissociative issues and system conflict in her life, there were several additional issues to consider:

  • Had anyone inside moved the keys after She put them on the table?
  • Were the insiders purposefully hiding the keys from her?
  • Was this an issue of self-sabotage, system conflict, or simple dissociation?
  • If She didn’t remember where the keys were put last, which insider did remember?
  • If someone inside remembered, were they going to tell her?
  • How long were the insiders going to keep this secret?  Did they think that was funny?
  • Were the keys sitting right there in plain sight, and was someone within her system purposefully blocking She’s vision?
  • Was She simply “not allowed” to see where the keys were?
  • Was someone inside hiding the car keys to keep her from driving?
  • Why did they not want her to be able to drive?
  • Was this a safety issue (to prevent some self-harm options that required a car)?
  • Was this a power and control issue (“we can do what we want, and She can’t stop us”)?
  • Were the insiders trying to sabotage and ruin She’s plans for the weekend?
  • Was this a system punishment of some sort?
  • Were the keys genuinely lost, and were all our questions about insider involvement way off track?

It became obvious that She didn’t know where the keys were.  There was no use wasting more time asking her to find them on her own.

Asking inside – asking the parts in She’s system – to tell her where they were wasn’t working either.  Everyone was quiet inside, and no one was willing to say where the keys were.

The only feeling that She got in response to the questions was that the keys were still in the house.  She had noticed She could feel a little rise in tension when She looked in the kitchen.  She was guessing the keys were there, but She still had no idea. She had looked everywhere in the kitchen – a few times – and still couldn’t find them.

She asked her insiders again, and again – and still no one would cooperate with a direct answer.  Where should She look in the kitchen? Should She keep looking in the kitchen?  Now what?

It was beginning to get clearer that either someone was hiding the keys on purpose from She. It was also becoming clear that others inside were feeling too scared of Key-Hider to tell She where the keys were.  The awkward silence was very telling.

We tried directly asking Key-Hider where the keys were.  The only response to that question was a bit cheeky.  “If I wanted the keys hidden from her, why would I tell you where they are?”   Oh ok.  Got that message loud and clear.  So Key-Hider wasn’t going to cooperate.

Hmmmmm.  Now what?

I asked She to go stand in the kitchen.  Since it appeared that the insiders didn’t feel like they could show She where the keys were – She was clearly not supposed to see the hiding spot – we didn’t go against that rule.  Instead, we respected that rule.  I asked She to close her eyes.  I spoke to the insiders through She.  They were, of course, listening behind her.  As a rule of thumb, when talking to any part of the DID system, expect that there will be others listening in the background, even if the part you are speaking with is not aware of anyone else being near.

I asked She to keep her eyes closed, and to put her hands out to feel around in the kitchen.  With DID, one part can be in charge of the most of the body, while someone else can gain control of the hands (or any other part of the body).  I reminded She that this was possible, and encouraged her to let someone pass through her to be in charge of the hands.

While She and her insiders were rummaging through kitchen areas, I continued to speak to the inside system.  I reminded them that She was not looking, that She could not see anything, and that they would not be breaking the rule of showing She where the keys were located, but I asked them to work together as a team.  Together, they were searching the kitchen for the car keys.

One of the things I mentioned to the Insiders was asking them if anyone else saw the Key-Hider hide the keys.  By this time it was clear that Key-Hider wasn’t being supportive of She.  Key-Hider was not going to say where the keys were hidden, and Key-Hider was acting more in direct opposition to She.  I asked for those who were willing to be kind and helpful to She to think about what they saw from behind the scenes, fully expecting that someone inside could have seen where Key-Hider put the keys.  I asked if any of the Helpers saw Key-Hider hide the keys, and if any of the Helpers could help She to find them.  I continued to remind She to keep her eyes closed, and to let the Helpers find the keys through her hands with their hands.

Within about fifty seconds, She giggled.  She could hear the keys, and once She was holding the keys, She was allowed to open her eyes.

After being missing for days, the keys were found!

She was thrilled, to say the least.

She mentioned that the most significant things I said were that She herself didn’t have to be told or shown where the keys were and that Key-Hider wasn’t put on the spot with demands for immediate answers or cooperation.  The idea that we could completely obey the rules, respect the opposition, and yet go around the rules by working with the other Insiders made a huge difference.  She said she would not have thought about asking her insiders for help, but it made all the difference.

So what’s the moral of the story?

  • If you are DID, remember that there are many others in there, and some of them will be on your side.
  • Even if you feel like others are against you, there will be some that will help you.
  • Using system communication, talking together, approaching problem-solving as a team will be more effective than you trying to work out issues alone.
  • Talk to each other!
  • Work together!

Not Getting to Be Your True Self – But Whose Life is it Anyway?

I’ve been wondering for awhile about what aspect to focus on with this week’s episode of United States of Tara.  Then I remembered the last minute of the show.

And I thought more of how very painful and how very real that heartbreak is for Buck.

Throughout this season two, Tara has struggled with the fact that she is in fact multiple – that she does have dissociative identity disorder – that she is switching, or “transitioning” as she calls it – that she has other parts to herself that also want time and attention and a little bit of life space.  Tara is upset about having to share her life with her insiders and she has convinced herself that she is the only one in the body who should have a life.  She has decided that she “is” the life, and that no one else matters, just her.

Apparently she thinks that she, Tara, is the one and only important self.  No one else matters –she is the only one that matters.  Tara, Tara, Tara – it’s all about Tara.

Well. I’ve heard far too many hosts present with that kind of attitude, but to the dismay of far too many host personalities, I completely disagree with that concept.

I vote for the system.

Meaning, if I had a vote regarding Tara, I would support Buck.

Buck is as real as Tara.

Buck is every bit as much of a person as Tara is.

Buck has his own thoughts, feelings, experiences, memories, wants, desires, etc.  He is as important as Tara is.

Can Tara stake claim as the ONLY part of the system that gets to have time?

Is she really the only one that is important?

I don’t think so.

See – the way I see it – Tara is only a portion of the person.  She is not THE person.  She is part of the whole person, the same as Buck is part of the whole person.  Tara may have the upfront, outwardly social wife and mother role of the person, but she is not the whole person.

Tara is important, there is no denying that.  I would never ever say she isn’t important.  And she can be considered the leader of the system – I’m all for that idea as well.

But to say she is the only one that matters???

That is taking it too far.

Buck and the others inside are also important.  They are as important as Tara.  They may have different roles, different abilities, different preferences, different histories, different memories, etc, but they are still part of the person as a whole, and they should get to have part of the life as well.

I’m not saying that I am supporting the idea that Buck has been having an affair outside of the marriage vows.  An affair is an affair, and Buck is completely and fully aware of what he has been doing that would be so very hurtful to the husband.  He is responsible for the pain he has caused in his family, and like it or not, he is actually already married.  Buck has cheated on his husband, and he will have to face the music on that one.

Yes, Buck and Tara have a whopping lot of work to do in order to resolve this conflict but the fact of the matter is, Buck is his own person too.

And part of the current heartbreak for Buck is that Tara has staked a little more claim on how the outward life is managed, and that genuinely leaves Buck not knowing how to be or do what he wants to be or do in his own life right now.  No, it really isn’t ok for Buck to go out and have his own affair.  Yes, he really is his own person, but his actions still affect those around him.  He will need to figure out a way to live happily and fulfilled as himself without hurting others.  I don’t know how that will look for Buck, but that is the challenge he is facing right now.

The point I want to emphasize here is that the DID system insiders do count.

They are real, they do exist, they have their own wants and dreams, and they are as important as anyone else.  So squashing them out of existence, or refusing to give them time or acknowledgement is not ok.

Cooperation, compromising and sharing are absolutely important – but refusing to let the insiders have their own life-space is bordering on creating a self-centered dictatorship, in my definition.

Buck’s heartbreak about not getting to have the life he wants on his very own is very real.  Insiders can and do feel extreme sadness and emotional pain over not being able to have their own bodies, their own separate lives, their own complete freedom of choice.  Buck really and truly wanted to have his own girlfriend, and to have his own relationship, and to have his own time in the body.  He wants the freedom to be his real self, and to make the choices he would make if he had his very own body.

If it were only that easy….

Sharing a body with 5-10-20-30 or more different insiders is extremely difficult.  There seems to never be enough time to do everything everyone wants to do.

It means that sharing the 24-hour day is essential.  It means that giving each other time in the body needs to be a coordinated, cooperative, ongoing process.

Finding ways to meet the needs, wants, and preferences of each of the different insiders is really complicated, and it does take a whole lot of work to find acceptable compromises.  The key word here, being compromise.  Tara can no more take over the life as completely her own any more than Buck can.  They have to find a way to work that out together.

Because they are both real.

And they both exist.

And they both can have a say in how life looks for them.

Because they are both important, and valuable, and necessary.

Buck really is as real as Tara.  And if he has to prove that, he can.

So to all the hosts out there – be willing to share the life-space with your insiders.  Because far too often, if you refuse to do that, your insiders could make a mutiny type decision like Buck did.  And that really never works out very well for anyone.

Value everyone in your system.

Use interpersonal skills layered in cooperation, compromise and teamwork.

Be willing to share.

Treat each other with kindness and generosity.

Accept that there are differences between you and the others and find ways to make it work so that everyone can get some of what they need.

Everyone in your system has the right to be happy.

Their lives matter too.

US of Tara – Sexual Confusion, Misconduct, and Acting-Out

Oh boy.

I didn’t have a chance to watch or write about last week’s episode of Showtime’s United States of Tara, so before the series got too much further, I thought I’d bring up the topic.

First of all – it’s now really clear to me what people were referring to as triggering about episode two.  The sudden sexual explicitness would be triggering to a lot of trauma survivors.  If you haven’t yet seen this episode, beware of the last five minutes of the show.

 

 

Buck sneaks out and meets someone in a bar.

 

Tara’s male alter, Buck, sneaks out in the middle of the night, goes to a bar, and develops a sexual relationship with a woman that works at the bar.  Tara is completely amnesiac for the hours Buck spends with the other woman, but she gradually notices some clues that she is missing time.  Tara runs into the bartender while grocery shopping, initially does not recognize her at all, and is embarrassed by the bartender’s flirty familiarity.  Tara eventually has vague recall of who the woman is, but reassures her that they will not be continuing that relationship, whatever it was.  Tara and Buck argue about this situation, and Tara says “Absolutely not!” but Buck seems to be winning.  He is able to continue his relationship with his new girlfriend despite Tara’s best efforts to squash it from happening.

There are layers of internal system conflicts demonstrated in the situation with Tara, Buck, and the bartender.  Specifically from this week’s show, I want to bring up the topics of sexual preferences and sexual acting-out.

Here are some questions I have been asked dozens of times:

If a male alter in a female body is attracted to women, is that a homosexual interest? Or is that a heterosexual interest?

If you had an insider sneaking out of the house to have a sexual relationship with another person, how would you handle that?  If this relationship was happening behind amnesiac walls, how long would it take for you to figure it out?

You might think that this story line is dramatic twist, but I have to admit, I have seen something very similar happen several different times during my years of working as a trauma therapist with dissociative survivors.

Sexual relationship issues do surface during the therapy treatment years.  Not only does this issue provide conflicting feelings for external relationships, it also can create significant tension, anxiety and conflict between system parts.  For example, it is not unusual for male insiders express a very different sexual preference than female insiders.  It is not unusual for male insiders to feel like they should have their own options instead of being “stuck” with whomever the girls have chosen.  The child parts may have a strong vote as well, meaning that they often want complete abstinence in order to feel safe.  This may or may not be acceptable to the adult parts, (or to the adult partners / spouses).  The subsequent arguments that can develop between system parts can be intense.  Learning to work out conflicts and find suitable compromises can be very difficult in these situations.

Re-enactments of sexual trauma have an impact on sexual interests and preferences.  As sexual trauma issues surface, survivors can respond in all kinds of ways.  Some of the ways include finding an external relationship that either imitates the traumatic relationship, or finding an external relationship to use as avoidance of sexual trauma issues.  Sometimes sexual addictions flare up rapidly, and the sexually interested insiders may feel intensely pulled towards sexual activities, including self-focused activities. Or most commonly, survivors completely lose interest in participating in a sexual relationship, and if a spouse or partner requests ongoing participation, there is a high-risk of the original traumatized child parts being pulled out.

It’s a difficult dilemma.

Most survivors with dissociative identity disorder (DID / MPD) will have insiders that express all of the above views.

How do you sort out all the different layers of conflict?
How do you meet all the varying needs?
